A car wash gets the loose dirt off the outside. A detail cleans the whole car properly, inside and out, including the spots a wash never touches. A wash takes minutes. A detail takes hours.
Both have their place. The trick is knowing which one your car needs right now, so you don’t book a detail when a wash would do, or keep washing a car that really needs more.
What does a car wash do?
A car wash removes surface dirt from the paint, glass and wheels, and that’s about it. There are three main kinds around Sydney, and they’re not equal.
- Automatic brush washes. Quick and easy. The brushes carry grit off every car before yours and drag it across your paint. That’s where most swirl marks come from.
- Touchless washes. No brushes, so less scratching, but they lean on strong chemicals and don’t shift stuck-on grime.
- Hand car washes at the shops. Better than brushes if the crew uses clean mitts and towels. Plenty don’t, because they’re doing a car every ten minutes.
What does a car detail include?
A detail covers the whole car one area at a time: paint, wheels, arches, door jambs, glass, then the cabin. On the outside that means a pre-rinse, a careful hand wash and decontamination to lift the bonded grime a wash leaves behind. Inside it means a proper vacuum, every surface wiped down and the glass cleaned without streaks.
How far it goes depends on the car. A standard detail with me takes 2 to 4 hours. I’ve written up the inside in what an interior detail includes, and all the options are on the services page.

Car wash vs detail at a glance
| Car wash | Detail | |
|---|---|---|
| Time | 5 to 20 minutes | 2 to 4 hours for a standard detail |
| What gets cleaned | The outside surfaces you can see | Paint, wheels, arches, door jambs, glass and the cabin |
| Tar, sap and baked-on brake dust | Stays | Comes off |
| Risk of swirl marks | High with brushes or dirty mitts | Low, it’s a careful hand wash |
| Interior | A quick vacuum at best | Vacuumed and wiped down properly |
| Where | You drive there | Your driveway, or my place in North Turramurra |
Is a car wash bad for your paint?
A brush wash is, yes. It won’t ruin the car in one go, but every pass adds fine scratches. Over a couple of years they build into the grey haze and spider webs you see on dark cars in the sun. A touchless wash or a careful hand wash at home is far kinder.
If you like washing your own car, how to wash your car at home covers the two-bucket method. If the swirls are already there, washing won’t take them out. That’s a polishing job, and ceramic coating vs paint correction explains how it works.
When is a wash enough, and when do you need a detail?
A wash is enough when the car is basically clean and you’re keeping it that way. A detail is worth it when the car has gone a few months without one, the inside needs real work, or you’re about to sell.
A job I get a lot: a family SUV in Wahroonga that goes through the servo wash every fortnight. The owners think of it as a clean car, and standing back in the driveway it is. Up close there’s brake dust baked onto the wheels, a film on the inside of the glass and crumbs packed down the sides of the seats. One detail gets it back, and after that a gentle wash every couple of weeks keeps it there.
For timing, see how often you should detail your car. Selling soon? Pre-sale detailing is its own thing.
Do you still need to wash between details?
Yes. A detail resets the car, and regular washing is what makes that last. Every two weeks is a good habit, more often if you park under trees.
I come to you across the North Shore, including Turramurra, St Ives, Pymble and Gordon. The full suburb list is in mobile detailing vs drop-off.
