Jacaranda flowers look great on the tree and terrible on your car. Left sitting, they go brown and mushy, stick to the paint, block the drains and can leave marks behind. The fix is simple: get them off every day or two, rinse before you wipe, and don’t let them rot in the gaps.

On the North Shore the purple usually shows up in late October and hangs around through November. If you park on the street in Kirribilli, Lindfield or Wahroonga, you already know what’s coming.

Do jacaranda flowers damage car paint?

They can if you leave them. Fresh flowers are harmless. The trouble starts when they get wet, break down and bake in the sun. The mush is sticky, it holds moisture against the paint, and on lighter colours it can leave a brown tint that a normal wash won’t shift.

It’s the same story as sap and droppings: the longer it sits in the heat, the harder it is to get off. I’ve covered those in how to remove tree sap and bird droppings.

Where do the flowers cause the most trouble?

The worst spots are the ones you don’t look at: the gutter at the base of the windscreen, the channels around the bonnet and boot, the door jambs and the sunroof drains. Flowers pack in there, turn to sludge and block the drain holes.

When those drains block, water goes where it shouldn’t. That’s how you end up with damp carpet and a musty smell a few weeks later. Open the bonnet, boot and doors once a week in jacaranda season and pull out whatever has collected.

How do you get jacaranda flowers off safely?

Lift them or rinse them off, don’t wipe them. Dry flowers blow off or pick off by hand. Anything stuck should be soaked with water first so it lets go without scrubbing.

  1. Pick or blow off the loose flowers.
  2. Rinse the car well, especially the windscreen gutter and around the wipers.
  3. Wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and a clean mitt.
  4. Clear the door jambs, the boot channel and the fuel flap.
  5. Dry it with a soft microfibre towel.

Don’t use the wipers to clear a pile of flowers. They smear the mush across the glass and jam it under the blades. The full wash method is in how to wash your car at home.

Spring pollen is the other one

That yellow dust that coats everything in spring is pollen. It looks soft but it’s gritty, so wiping it off dry with a cloth or your hand scratches the paint. Rinse it off with water first, every time.

What if the flowers have already left a mark?

Start with a proper wash, then see what’s left. A light stain often comes out with a clay bar or a paint cleaner. If the mark is still there after that, it has got into the clear coat and needs a machine polish.

One I see every November: a white hatchback parked on the street in Lindfield while the owner is away for two weeks. The roof and bonnet are carpeted in brown flowers, and under them the paint has a faint tea-coloured tint. Most of it lifts with a decontamination wash, and a light polish takes care of what’s left.

Polishing can be done at your place or in-house in North Turramurra. Ceramic coating vs paint correction explains what’s involved.

Does a ceramic coating help in jacaranda season?

Yes, it helps a lot. A coated car is slicker, so flowers and sap don’t grip as hard and they rinse off more easily. It won’t stop them falling, and you still need to wash the car, but it buys you time before anything marks the paint.

More on that in how long ceramic coating lasts in Australia. And if your car lives under a tree all year, how often you should detail it is worth a read.
